Welcome to the Lesson.

In this lesson we look at words in English which sound the same or very similar but have different meanings.  These are usually called 'homophones'.

Look at these sentences and the words in red:

 

The soles of my shoes are worn out.

Do you believe animals have souls?

He worked here formerly.

He spoke very formally.

You have my assent to that.

Did they manage the ascent?

Don't desert him when he needs you.

What would you like for dessert?

This is the first draft of the letter.

There's a terrible draught in here.

The council has been elected.

I counsel you against doing that.

Did you break the bottle?

I tried to brake the car in time.

I've sown some early vegetables.

I've sewn up the hole in my pocket.

It was quite a beautiful sight.
