About the Exercises

The Music Business - in this exercise, a man called Trevor talks about his life in the music business and what he does now.  Before you listen, think about

  • What kinds of music are there?

  • Is it easy to make money by playing music?

  • What kinds of jobs are there in the music business? Top

Long 'ee' or Short 'i'? - in the exercise you must choose how a word is spoken - a long 'ee' or a short 'i' sound.  For example, can you hear the difference between 'ship' and 'sheep' or between 'hit' and 'heat'?  Top

What did he say? - in the exercise you hear someone say 8 sentences.  You must choose the right sentence from three possible answers.  Top

The Meaning of Life - in this exercise, you will hear Jane talking about how her life was changed.  Before you listen, think about
  • Money makes you happy.  What do you think? 
  • What do you know about Indian religions?
  • How do you relax? Top
I Love Cats - in this exercise, you will hear Christine talking about her love for cats.  Before you listen, think about
  • Do you like cats? 
  • What kinds of pets do people have?

Living in the Outback - in this exercise, you will hear Ernie talking about living and working in Australia.  Before you listen, think about
  • What do you know about Australia - the people, the climate and so on? 
  • What dangers are there in the Australian outback?
  • Are you frightened of some kinds of animals? Top

Sound Interesting - in this exercise, you can listen to some sound in English and learn how to describe them - words like 'thump', 'whistle' and 'squeal'.

Verb or Noun?  Some words in English can be nouns or verbs but the stress is different.  This exercise introduces you to some of them and tests your ability to hear the difference.
